Field Note 002 — Morakniv Companion
Not all blades are the same, and not all blades are meant for everything.
Some are built to split wood. Others are designed to dress game, prepare food, or withstand levels of abuse that most of us will never ask of a knife. Looking for a single blade that excels at every task is usually an exercise in disappointment. Like most tools, a knife performs best when it's designed with a specific purpose in mind.
The Morakniv Companion doesn't pretend to be everything. It was designed to be a practical, affordable utility knife for people who spend time outdoors, and after years of carrying one, I think that's exactly where it excels.
Ironically, I wasn't looking for a Morakniv when I found one.
I had seen the name before, but never paid much attention to it. It wasn't until I was visiting a friend in Central California that I finally handled a Companion for the first time. He handed me the knife almost casually, but within a few minutes I understood why it had developed such a loyal following. There was nothing flashy about it. It simply felt right. The handle fit my hand naturally, the knife felt light without feeling cheap, and everything about it suggested it had been designed to work rather than impress. F'n Travis...
A few months later, around my thirty-second birthday, I bought my first Companion. I was preparing to process my first turkey and wanted a fresh, razor-sharp blade because if I was fortunate enough to harvest a bird, I wanted the process to be as clean and respectful as possible.
That first Companion didn't stay my only one.
Over the years I've purchased several. Today both my lady and I carry one whenever we head into any outdoor adventure. I've owned plenty of knives before and since, and I have no interest in pretending the Companion is the only knife anyone will ever need. It isn't. No knife is. Every knife has a purpose, and that's exactly why I own more than one.
What it has proven to be, however, is one of the most versatile, comfortable, and dependable fixed blades I've ever carried. For the price, it's remarkably difficult to beat, and after years of camping, hiking, and weekend trips, it has earned a permanent place on my belt.
I still love my Leatherman. My Ka-Bar has never let me down. My Camillus has proven itself time and again as a workhorse, my Buck/TOPS is an absolute monster, and even my M-Tech knives have survived more abuse than they probably deserved. Every one of them has a place. What I didn't realize for years was that the Companion had found one too. I had seen many a "bushcraft" knife on the Youtubes and thought they were neat but didn't really see the value, I suppose. Once I finally had a Companion in my grip, something felt right.
Visually, the Companion isn't particularly exciting. Molded plastic. A simple sheath. A blade that isn't especially long, thick, or flashy. There's no premium price tag to brag about and nothing about it screams "look at me."
Then you hold one.
The molded grip just feels right—neither oversized nor undersized. The "boring" sheath does better than one would expect. It has a built-in hole on the back to slide over buttons or rivets, while the clip itself is meant for a belt or anything similar....and when it grabs, it grabs. The sheath provides a reassuring hold on the knife as well. There isn't a pronounced click when you sheath it like there would be with a Level II holster, but you can feel when it's fully seated. While it isn't the smallest knife once it's in the sheath... it's sturdy and not bothersome.
The blade is where the Companion quietly earns its reputation. Thicker than your average folder, somewhere close to a combat knife....It's deceptively thick considering just how sharp the factory edge is. Out of the box it's razor sharp, and I don't mean that in the clickbait way...this thing will cut paper with zero resistance. The tang is thick enough that you can abuse this blade if necessary, baton it through wood (or a substance of your preference) and it will soak it up. Sharpening it is a breeze. It has a slightly thinner profile than your average utility knife, but it holds up well and takes a fresh edge with very little effort.
Will it replace everything? Absolutely not. Nothing will, and if you are looking for that, I may suggest some melatonin, as the only place you will find that blade is in your dreams. Is it rugged, affordable, and a perfect fit for that middle niche? Absolutely. When these knives have been lost, I have shed a tear....but replaced them with ease, as Mora isn't trying to make a bougie knife but a useful one at an unbeatable price.
I will always keep a plethora of sharps around me, as they are invaluable in and around a campsite, vehicle, or honestly general life situation. My Companion, though, will be with me and all those around me. Rugged, dependable, affordable....what more could you ask for? If you're in the market for a fixed blade knife that will take care of you, but also won't break the bank, the Companion is for you my friend. Don't be afraid, go whittle something.
